Globalization of Culture and the Backstreet Boys!

Strolling through the Latvian capital, Riga, earlier this month, I had a "globalization moment" -- sort of a "senior moment," except that I remember it just fine, thanks -- induced by large billboards heralding concerts by the Backstreet Boys and Busta Rhymes.
If Florida boy bands and Flatbush rap acts are selling tickets in Latvia, my epiphany went, then modern youth culture really has gone global. There's no more East vs. West, no more First, Second and Third Worlds, no more post-this or ante-that for the planet's now-homogeneous young consumers. The Boys and Busta can move product anywhere but Pyongyang and Minsk, and not by drawing on some transportable fan base of Groupies Without Borders. The market is universal. [Read more]

A.J. McLean attempts to fly solo

A.J. McLean is most famous for being the 'bad boy' of hit 90s boyband The Backstreet Boys but, with his upcoming solo album, he is attempting to forge a successful solo career.
The 30-year-old singer - who is partly responsible for the band's hit tracks including '(Everybody) Backstreet's Back' and 'As Long as You Love Me' - insists he isn't worried about stepping away from the sound which led to his fame.
"We're calling it a rock, funk and soul vibe. The vocals are pop and R 'n'B-ish and there's even a kind of country twang going on," he said. "It's eclectic. I think people will be a little shocked by some songs, which is absolutely fine by me. They'll be thinking, 'That is what I hoped he was going to do'." [Read more]

The American super boyband took to the stage at the O2 last night as a four piece, minus original member KEVIN RICHARDSON.
They opened the show with a blast of pyrotechnics in a boxing ring set up, performing their hit Larger Than Life.

AJ McLean has revealed his tour secret is tea.
The Backstreet Boys singer is currently on tour with the band, and will then do a solo tour straight away, but plans to keep going by drinking tea and sleeping as much as he can.

BACKSTREET Boys not only rocked their bodies, they rocked the Odyssey Arena on Monday night when they played their first ever gig in Belfast.
The Odyssey crowd are a notorious species, with their passion for music and noise at shows by some of the world's top artists well renowned. This, however, was on another level.

THE Backstreet Boys certainly had it "going on" as they rocked Glasgow's SECC last night.
The bestselling boy band of all time proved they've still got what it takes - and that Backstreet's well and truly back.
OK, with youngest member Nick Carter now 28 they are no longer boys but it didn't stop them performing energetic dance routines while singing live before thousands of young and not-so-young fans.
AJ, Brian, Howie and Nick didn't appear to miss former fifth member Kevin as they kicked off their live show with the intro to Eye Of The Tiger before storming into 1999 crowd-pleaser Larger Than Life in a custom-built boxing ring on stage.
The set featured some of their best-loved tracks from their 1990s heyday including I Want It That Way and Everybody (Backstreet's Back).
